Project Background
In the construction of mountain-area expressways, concrete paving on steep slopes is an extremely challenging construction procedure. Conventional equipment is prone to problems such as slippage, uneven paving thickness and concrete segregation, which directly affect project quality and construction schedule. Faced with the paving challenge of a 22° steep slope for a mountain-area expressway project, Yuantai Machinery delivered customized equipment and full-process services to help complete construction efficiently and build a benchmark case for steep-slope paving.
Project Overview
A mountain-area expressway project contains numerous steep mountain-slope construction sections. The key construction section features a slope angle of 22°, with a design requirement for a 20 cm-thick concrete surface course. Located in mountainous terrain, the site has rugged landforms and narrow working surfaces, while slope soil stability is limited. The project is subject to tight construction schedules. The owner set strict acceptance criteria for paving uniformity and finished-surface flatness, and large-area repair and rework are not permitted afterwards.
Construction Pain Points and Challenges
At the initial stage of the project, the contractor deployed conventional paving equipment, which exposed multiple urgent-to-resolve on-site pain points:
-
1
Conventional pavers lack hydraulic balancing support structures adapted for steep-slope working conditions. Equipment slippage and tilting frequently occurred, with paving-thickness errors reaching up to ±8 mm and uneven layer thickness.
-
2
Concrete mix tended to slide down the slope, triggering segregation and edge collapse, resulting in severely damaged finished surfaces that required repeated manual repair.
-
3
Low construction efficiency: the effective daily paving length was only 150 meters. Based on the original progress forecast, the section faced heavy schedule pressure.
-
4
Manual repairs increased concrete consumption and raised material loss, driving up overall construction costs.
After multiple trials, traditional equipment solutions failed to meet both quality and schedule requirements. The contractor finally cooperated with Yuantai Machinery and adopted the customized steep-slope paving solution for project delivery.
Implementation of Yuantai Machinery’s Solution
Targeting the 22° steep-slope working condition, 20 cm paving thickness and narrow working environment, Yuantai Machinery developed a purpose-built slope paver, matched with special construction techniques and full-time on-site technical support to guarantee accurate solution implementation.
Customized Equipment Configuration
Full-Process Technical Service Support
- Pre-mobilization: Technicians conduct construction simulation based on site cross-section drawings to confirm paving routes, travelling speed, vibration frequency and other parameters.
- Construction phase: On-site technical briefing is provided to guide operators on operation specifications for start-stop, steering and fine thickness adjustment under steep-slope conditions.
- Process control: Complete process recommendations are offered covering slope pre-treatment, concrete slump matching and finished-surface curing.
Project Outcomes
- Construction Quality: Paving-thickness errors are stably kept within ±2 mm. No obvious concrete slippage or segregation occurs. The slope features good integrity with one-time forming, drastically reducing subsequent repair work.
- Construction Efficiency: Effective daily paving distance increased from 150 m to 400 m, saving 12 construction days for this steep-slope section.
- Cost Control: Concrete consumption and labor input for repairs are reduced, lowering overall construction costs.
- Client Feedback: The project lead commented: “The self-adaptive paving function of Yuantai slope pavers greatly reduces manual intervention, and the finished construction quality meets internationally leading standards.”
Extended Applicable Scenarios
The successful delivery of this case verifies the feasibility and practicality of Yuantai Machinery’s steep-slope paving solution. This solution can be widely replicated for similar projects including slope protection for mountain-area expressways, high-steep river-bank slope protection, slope lining for mountain geological-hazard treatment, and provides reliable references for various steep-slope construction works.
